Common names-Penguin Tetras, Penguin Fish
Penguin Tetras originate from the soft
waters of the Amazon Basin where they live in large shoals. A group of six or more added
to the freshwater aquarium will mix well with other community fish which are larger or of a similar
size.
Penguin Tetras can act aggressively towards smaller fish so should
not be mixed with other smaller tetras for example. If you do the penguin tetras will become quite
territorial attacking any smaller fish that ventures into their chosen territory.
Their strong shoaling nature means that you will usually find them together
in a group. They swim with their heads higher than their tails giving a distinctive look to a
shoal.
They are most at home in a well planted tank and will spend a
great deal of their day in amongst the plants. Plants that provide surface cover are especially
welcomed.
They will live happily on a diet of flake food supplemented with
live food such as bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia.
