Common names- Zebra Fish, Striped Danio

The Zebra Danio originates from parts of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan and is one of the hardiest fish in the aquarium.  It is often used to cycle a new tank as it can cope with difficult conditions that other fish would not survive.  This characteristic as well as its colourful looks makes it an ideal fish for beginners.

It will fit well into a community tank and has a peaceful disposition towards other fish although there can be problems with fin nipping if they are kept in small numbers.  Fin nipping seems to stop as soon as you have more than six fish.

They are confident top dwellers and will often be used as dither fish to encourage more cautious fish out into the open.  They do need a tank of at least ten gallons or more to be happy.

They will do well on a diet of flake floods and live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Zebra Danios will breed readily but will also eat the eggs and young if left in the same tank.  If you want to seriously breed these fish you will need to move the male and female into a separate tank and then remove them once they have spawned.  Always make sure that the breeding tank has coarse gravel where the eggs will hide and avoid being eaten.
